If you didn't catch "Downtown Calling" at the HBO Latino Film Festival in Chelsea last night, you may have to wait some time to see it. But remember the title because the documentary is lively, expertly edited and presents a deft deconstruction of how New York's creative mythology rose from the ashes of a once broke, lawless and smelly city.

When the James Hotel opens its doors this fall in SoHo, on the corner of Thompson and Grand, many things will be shiny and new. But some of the staff will look like they have waited years for customers to arrive. British menswear designer Andrew Buckler created uniforms influenced by Charles Dickens for the front of house staff.

We're no marketing geniuses or anything but if a company wanted to inject their brand with punk rock cool, they could do worse than to commission Iggy Pop & The Stooges to play an exclusive show in Williamsburg.

Sunglasses maker Ray-Ban feted their classic aviator shades (and introduced six new styles) with a two-city concert event. Wednesday's party featured sets by Philadelphia's Free Energy and indie darlings The Virgins. The second party, to take place in London, will feature the New York Dolls and a DJ set by Jarvis Cocker.

Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour joined a very exclusive club on Thursday evening, when she was formally inducted into the American Society of Magazine Editors Hall of Fame during the National Magazine Awards, held at Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. She became the 25th editor to be honored, joining Tina Brown, Helen Gurley Brown, Lewis Lapham, Clay Felker and Michael Kinsley.

When Patrick Wintour, The Guardian's political editor and Wintour's younger brother, was unable to arrive in New York due to the volcanic ash-related travel delays, he taped a message in front of London's Parliament. "I understand it's like the John Wayne award, for someone who's been around for a long time and hasn't won any prizes," he said, in that very dry British wit. "So it's very sweet of you to think of the old girl at this stage."

Missed last night's Zac Posen party? Footage of it may show up on MTV soon.

MTV's The City's cameras were in full force at Zac Posen's Target 24-hour party at the New Yorker, where they followed Elle's Joe Zee and Olivia Palermo. At one point, Palermo and Posen sprinted off suddenly, followed by the amusing sight of full grown men carrying heavy gear scattering after them. Palermo, wielding an Elle.com microphone, interviewed the designer -- a scene also filmed for the show. The whole "TV show taping fashionable media girls as they create content" could tempt some to reach for a Marshall McLuhan reference.

Corey Haim, a teen hearthrob to the Sassy and TigerBeat generation, died today in Los Angeles, according to the Associated Press. He was 38. Autopsy results will confirm the cause of death at a later time.

The teen star, whose fame increased following roles with his best friend Corey Feldman in movies like "License to Drive" and "The Lost Boys," grew into a man who publicly battled drug addiction. In 2007, Haim reunited with Feldman for an A&E reality series, "The Two Coreys."

One might be forgiven for not knowing that March 8 was International Women's Day. First celebrated in 1911, IWD is a national holiday, on par with Mother's Day, in several countries across the world.

Though it has a lower-profile in the United States, designer Diane von Furstenberg has celebrated the date for several years. On Monday evening, she hosted singer Estelle and Brazilian artist Panmela Castro-Anarkia in collaboration with Vital Voices, a women's group founded by then-First Lady Hillary Clinton that aims to empower disenfranchised women.

Vice magazine launched a new video series, "Munchies," in which celebrity chefs are hauled out of the kitchen and filmed while on the town. If the first episode is any indication, lots and lots of alcohol will be involved. (And as the series name suggests, maybe even some pot-smoking -- which upsets our family-paper standards so we'll just pretend we didn't hear that.)

Nicole Kidman Signs Her Name for Charity by Elva Ramirez

It was 6:02 when we arrived for a 6:00 p.m. cocktail reception with Nicole Kidman, and it was already chaos.

An NYPD squad car was parked outside the Omega flagship store on Fifth Avenue, its flashing lights competing with bombastic cheeriness from the Disney store next door. An NYPD officer snarled at camera-phone toting tourists: "I told you to move on! There's nothing to see!"

But it wasn't their fault, entirely. Lookie Loos were drawn like moths to the giant white lights set up outside a mini-red carpet where a scrum of paparazzi lay in wait. A burly security guy even blocked the publicists with the clipboards. He gave us the fish-eye when we asked to check in. (What! No one told us we were going to party with Nicole Kidman when we got up at 6 a.m.! Doc Martens make sense at dawn, ok?)

Inside, the space was elegant, softly lit and quiet in the way only churches and extremely moneyed havens are.

When Bronx bride Mildred Carty was searching the Web for affordable wedding options last month, she came across a quirky option that didn't involve a church or city hall: Getting hitched, Vegas-style, in a New York City storefront.

"Wedding Chapel," the latest incarnation of Grand Opening, a Lower East Side-based collective that reinvents their artists' space every three months, now offers both quickie weddings and mock ceremonies for adventurous couples looking to tie the knot, or just have some fun.

Big band swing and its counterpart, the lindy hop, have been part of the American cultural landscape since the early part of last century. "Lindy hop is the physical embodiment of swing jazz," explains Rik Panganiban, an administrator behind the largest swing dance website, Yehoodi.com.

Ayana Josef, Nona Amoruso, and Rhonda Goss are strangers to each other, but each of them mourned Michael Jackson's death in the same way. They were shocked to learn of his death on June 25, and they spent the next four days remembering his music and his impact on their lives. They gathered with family and friends in the days after the news, describing their sadness in terms similar to that losing a cherished family member.

So for them and thousands of New Yorkers, four days of private mourning wasn't enough. On Monday, June 30, fans went to Harlem's Apollo theater, stood in the June sun, and waited as long as three hours to say goodbye inside, 600 fans at a time.
