Backstage before his show, designer Georges Chakra said that his new collection was feminine and sensual. "It moves when you move," he said, suggesting something lighter than air with his hands. "Women will like it because it's young, modern and classy."
As the dresses came out, clouds of chiffon floated and trailed around the models, alternately covering and exposing calves and ankles. Models went for the full effect, pausing for photographers before dramatically turning away in puffs of ombre, snowy white or gold. There were a few fitted mini dresses but most of the gowns were red carpet-worthy, with billowing hems and glittering embellishments.
(Whether the new dresses will appear at any awards shows remains to be seen. But this Monday, one of the designer's dresses will appear in the "Gossip Girl" season premiere.)
Neutrals (albeit glittery luxe versions of white, grey, black, nude and gold) dominated the collection, with spots of turquoise, saffron and coral. The intention was to sell the customer a dress with timeless appeal, the designer said. "Nude colors are always chic," Mr. Chakra said. "If you buy this color this season and you want to wear it two years from now, it's easy. It's something that always lives."
