It's hard to believe that Tyra Banks' "America's Next Top Model" reality show is already on its 15th cycle. (Filming is currently underway on cycle 16.) But this season, which premieres tonight at 8 p.m. on the CW, is already outpacing the previous runs. It's the "high-fashion" season. Brace yourselves.
The winner of cycle 15 gets two spreads in industry heavyweight Vogue Italia, as well as a contract with IMG Models, home to Kate Moss and Gisele Bundchen. Additionally, Banks, with help from Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley, wrangled ANTM's most impressive talent pool yet: Patrick Demarchelier, Diane von Furstenberg, Zac Posen and Roberto Cavalli all make appearances.
After Banks appeared in Italian Vogue's July 2008 all-black models issue, she and Italian Vogue's editor Franca Sozzani maintained a relationship, leading to an agreement to feature the magazine as the winning publication.
Because of the talent pedigree, the newest crop of young hopefuls are among the loveliest yet. Our early favorites are Rhianna, who has the sweet quirkiness of Irina Lazareanu, and Ann, who is endearingly awkward and takes stunning photos.
The girl who wins this cycle is going to be "really high fashion," Banks said. "Probably so high fashion that the American market might not understand it but I just want it to be real. That's why it has to be Italian Vogue. It has to the epitome of high fashion."
"She can possibly cross back to American and do Gap and Banana Republic," she added. "But I think it's very important for [the winner] to have the core of high fashion. I see her in Italian magazines, French magazines and British magazines."
"The difference between American Idol and Top Model is that music is international," Banks said. "So you can really see the success. Whereas in the fashion industry, there's a million magazines. If you book Greek Elle? That's huge. But does the American girl see it? No." (Banks tells Heard on the Runway that the era of the baby model might be soon over.)
At the end of the press breakfast, Banks took questions from the group. Below is her answer to the perennial "What's the best way to take a good photo?" query. See the clip below for her response.
